Seaweed structures by Julia LohmannMAKERS
Julia Lohmann’s work in East Iceland has continued her research into seaweed and its use within design production and manufacture. During the workshop, samples were collected from the beaches at Borgarfjörður eystra. Julia treats the seaweed to maintain its flexibility before it is shaped over aluminium or wooden frameworks to create organic structures and vessels.
Julia Lohmanns seaweed concept for Designs from Nowhere build on the ideologies of MAKE to explore the possibilities for small-scale design and production in East Iceland, using locally sourced materials and skills. The work was created during workshops that took place along the remote Icelandic coastline, in collaboration with local practitioners in Egilsstaðir, Djúpivogur, Eskifjörður and Norðfjörður.
